Facing flak at home over black money stashed abroad, India will press for transparency in the functioning of tax havens at the G20 Finance Ministers meeting in Paris on Friday to unearth “ill-gotten” money lying in such sovereign jurisdictions.

“There should be transparency. Particularly the tax havens should cooperate with countries to unearth the ill-gotten resources which are being deposited there,” Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said ahead of the meeting.

There are sovereign jurisdictions which, however, are not sovereign countries, like St Kitts and the British Virgin Islands, among others.

“With them, we are not having DTAA, but we are entering into agreement, which is called exchange of tax information,” Mukherjee said, adding that the problem of black money can be addressed only in a legal way.

“Without any legal framework, nobody is going to give information to you,” he added.

India has already signed tax information exchange agreements (TIEA) with four jurisdictions — the British Virgin Islands, Isle of Man, the Bahamas and Bermuda.

The coalition government in India, headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, is facing heat over black money stashed abroad from the Supreme Court, the Opposition and the media.

The government is being blamed for not taking enough action in this regard.

If you thought the meltdown on the Street that began in the New Year is going to end anytime soon – then be afraid, be very afraid. For one, the view on the Street is unanimous, at least among chartists, that we are in a clear bear market and it will continue till we
see a signifi cant correction from the already brow-beaten levels of 5,662 (January 17). Th at would be bad news for bulls, but bears would be smacking their lips in anticipation. Th ey have a good enough reason to be, for the charts are showing that the momentum indicators, the moving average convergencedivergence and the relative strength index, are in a clear sell mode. More importantly, from a big pic ture perspective too the market looks vulnerable. Putting the fall in perspective, Ashish Shroff of Ambit Capital says the trend has to be seen in light of the Elliot wave theory. Th e Nifty started its fi rst bull run in December 1998 from the lower level of 800 and completed the first leg of the major fi ve-wave upmove rally in
January 2008 at an all-time high level of 6,357. Th e sharp fall witnessed from January 2008 (6,357) to the lows of October 2008 (2,252) was the second corrective leg of the major bull market.
From 2,252 in October 2008 the Nifty started its third wave and nearly completed the fi rst wave of this third rally (6,338) in November 2010.

“In the forthcoming months we expect the index to retrace the fi rst wave and to correct the minimum retracement level of 23.6 per cent, which is at 5,400,” points out Shroff . Concurring with
Shroff is Quant Broking’s Biju Samuel, who was among the fi rst to call the bear market in November 2010. “We are in a
cyclical bear market that will continue well till mid- or late-2012. It won’t be a one-way decline, we will see bouts of recovery,
but we will continue make lower tops and could well hit 4,500 levels in 15 months,” says Samuel. However, Shroff feels 5,400 will be a key support as it marks the 200 DMA for the index. “After
a knee-jerk reaction to 5,400 we expect the Nifty to begin its next upmove (third wave of the major third wave), which could be in end-2011 or post 2011 and that could target the 7,000 level.” In
other words, bears will have a fi eld day on the Street, while bulls can fancy their chances only if the index stays above 6,000 levels.

Offered by firms such as MG, DSP and ING, investing in a feeder fund is like investing in a regular mutual fund scheme. The fund takes the investment in rupees from you and invests abroad, likely in other MF schemes. Unfortunately, besides the simplicity value, there are not too many benefits of feeder funds. For one, you pay a fee of 0.50-0. 75 per cent to the feeder fund in India in addition to the underlying global fund fee, making this an expensive option. These funds in realised return terms have often been poor quality, partly because there is not too much competition in this space.

Issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), these bonds carry an interest of 8 per cent per annum. The interest is compounded half yearly and is taxable. The minimum investment is 1,000 and you can invest in multiples of 1,000 thereafter. What’s more, there’s is no upper limit for investment. Maturity for these bonds is five years from the date of issue. The investor receives the interest on 1 January and 1 July every year. These bonds also offer you a cumulative option. In such cases, these are issued at a face value of 1,000 and redeemed at1,601. Since these bonds are issued by the country’s central bank, they are not rated. With the government’s backing, however, they are considered safe.

Taxation. As per the provisions of the Income Tax Act, interest received on these bonds is not exempt from income tax. These bonds are exempt from wealth tax. But note that there is no tax benefit for the amount you invest in these bonds.

Holding. These bonds can be held in an account called bond ledger account (BLA) or in the form of a promissory note (PN). The bonds in the form of BLA are issued and held in any branch of a bank authorised by RBI or in the public debt offices of RBI. The bonds in the form of PN are issued only at RBI branches. However, boilds issued in one form cannot be converted to another.

Liquidity. Premature withdrawal is not possible, but these bonds can be sold or transferred to another person. If the bonds are in the form of BLA, they cart be transferred by execution of a transfer deed. The name of transferee has to be registered as the holder of the bond in the office of issue for the transfer to be valid. After the transfer, a new BLA would be opened in the name of the transferee by closing the BLA of the transferor. Bond in the form of PN are transferable by endorsement and delivery.

Risks. Your real return might turn negative if inflation is over 8 per cent.

1. WHAT’S IN THE NUMBER? November industrial production fell to 2.7 per cent, signifi cantly below the 11.3 per cent growth
clocked in the previous month as consumer durables and non-durables sector growth contracted 6 per cent. However, cumulative growth in the eight months to November was up 9.5 per cent against 7.4 per cent a year-ago.

2. WHY THE CHANGE? While in the past, volatility was primarily attributed to capital goods production, this time, cap goods posted a strong growth of 12.6 per cent, consumer durables slowed down sharply to a little over 4 per cent and in the consumer non-durables
category, growth in intermediate goods fell to 2.4 per cent, refl ecting moderation in overall industrial growth.

3. WHAT ARE ANALYSTS SAYING? Going ahead, December and March numbers are likely to be particularly weak, given the high base effect in these months. However, the view is with the uptick in credit growth and exports in recent months, the number will improve.

4. WILL THE RBI HIKE RATES? The weak trend in industrial production and rising infl ation pose a challenge for the monetary policy. While price stabilisation is a dominant concern for the central bank, an aggressive tightening by the RBI (given the tight liquidity conditions) could impact sentiment.

It’s been quite a shaky start to the New Year on the bourses, with the benchmark Sensex falling 8 per cent year-till-date (January 14). Coming on the back of a volatile third quarter that saw the index correct 2 per cent after touching its all-time high, the signs are looking ominous on the Street. If scams had spooked the markets in the previous quarter, macro headwinds, particularly infl ation, have got the markets jittery, of late. Not surprising that analysts are looking at a very sedate earnings growth in the third quarter. According to earnings estimates of leading brokerages, the average growth in sales and profi t for Sensex companies is expected to be around 16 per cent and 21 per cent, respectively.

Th e third quarter should fl ag off the moderation in earnings momentum, with a yearly growth of 25 per cent in Sensex consolidated earnings against 45 per cent in the second quarter, states a report by CLSA. “With the favourable base eff ect wearing off and margin
pressures creeping in, variance in performance across companies is rising,” writes N Krishnan of the fi rm. Analysts expect the moderation to continue for at least a quarter before things begin to ease out, especially given the infl ationary pangs.

CLSA feels the trend in earnings across companies clearly refl ects the move into a more mature phase of the growth cycle. Dispersion of growth withinsectors is highest for oil & gas, capital goods and power. Agrees Dipojjal Saha of Edelweiss, who feels earnings
growth is most likely to be under pressure in cement (-28.8 per cent) and telecom (-32.1 per cent). “The outlook for commodity sectors remains healthy given the demand pickup on the back of improving traction in global economy,” writes Saha in his report. On the positive side, analysts expect a rerating of IT and pharma sectors given the recovery in the US and $110 billion patents due to expire in the coming years.

Th ough statistically, infl ation should come down as it did last year, there are concerns about monsoon and liquidity pressures persisting. Pankaj Pandey, head-research, ICICIdirect, feels investors should be vary of chasing rate-sensitive sectors. “We are not
expecting very great numbers for infrastructure, power and capital goods for at least the next two quarters.”

More importantly, the Street is now factoring in estimates for the next fi scal. CLSA is looking at 19 per cent growth in Sensex earnings for FY12, while Edelweiss is looking at 21 per cent to Rs 1,271, lower from its earlier Rs 1,282. Th e worry is, as we head into
FY12, headwinds could intensify, as raw material cost, wages and borrowing costs increase, thereby, increasing the risk of downgrades to estimates.

The auto industry is on a roll. Th e sector outperformed the market in the December quarter with the auto index gaining 7.4 per cent against the Nifty’s 1.7 per cent. While volume growth continues to be buoyant, there are concerns over whether rising commodity prices – steel, aluminium prices are up by a yearly average of 11 per cent and rubber by 60 per cent – could take the sheen off margins. But most analysts feel otherwise and here is why. “While on an overall basis commodity prices may have gone up by 4-5 per cent, almost 2 per cent of that could have easily been passed on by the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).Th at mitigates the risk to margins,” says Umesh Karne, vice-president research, Brics Securities.

October 2010 was a bumper month for most OEMs as sales hit an all-time high owing to the festive season, but November was a lull
period. December saw sales rebounding with a bang, negating any doubts. Going forward, March is likely to be a good month since most OEMs liquidate their old stock. Besides, what is also playing on the buyer’s mind right now is the excise duty hike that the Union Budget may bring in. “We believe the excise duty on auto will increase in the Budget and it could go back to 12 per cent. Th is has also promoted some pre-buying,” says Karne. Th us, robust volumes are expected to cushion earnings growth.

In the commercial vehicles (CV) segment, after subdued sales in Q3FY11 owing to a change in emission norms and as after-eff ects of pre-buying in the fi rst half of the year, Q4FY11 is expected to bring back some normalcy. “Since Q4 is traditionally the strongest month for CVs, we expect the segment to outdo passenger cars and two-wheelers,” says Amol Bhutada, analyst, Elara Securities

Th e biggest relief for the sector has come from the price hike that most players undertook recently. “Th e price hike
in the beginning of the year and the volume growth will make sure that bottomline is not impacted,” says Sejal Jhunjhuwla,
senior analyst, Way- 2Wealth Securities. According to Deepak Jain of Edelweiss, operating margins will remain steady as operating leverage benefi ts are off set by rising commodity costs. PAT for the sector, too, is expected to grow 13 per cent y-o-y in the third
quarter, feels Jain.

The price of the mid-cap stock rose 2 per cent over the fortnight to Rs 148 amid an 83 per cent jump in volumes. Announcement of a preferential issue and expected investment of Rs 113 crore by
ChrysCapital also aided sentiment. Angel Broking is bullish on the stock with a ‘buy’ rating and a target price of Rs 164.

Redington (India)

The stock of the IT products distributor slumped 9 per cent even as volumes increased 95 per cent over the fortnight. However, analysts are bullish on the non-IT business prospects of the company. Trading at Rs 74, Asian Market Securities has a ‘buy’ rating with a Rs 106 target.

Indian Hotels

Volumes in the hospitality major’s stock surged 65 per cent over the fortnight, while the price moved up 4 per cent. Analysts expect the second half of FY11 to be strong on the back of robust growth in foreign tourist arrivals. The company also plans to set
up 43 new projects over the next three-four years.
